5 ART GALLERIES TO EXPLORE IN DOWNTOWN EDMONTON

Sometimes nothing inspires us more than going to explore some beautiful art. Luckily for us, Edmonton is home to some incredible art galleries – specifically here in downtown Edmonton – that hosts some incredible exhibitions and supports local artists. Check out this list of a few of our favourites down below.

 

1. Art Gallery of Alberta

A must-see is the Art Gallery of Alberta – which is hard to miss with being wrapped in silver ribbons representing the aurora borealis and the North Saskatchewan River. It hosts a great deal of incredible exhibits (which you can see a list of upcoming ones here) and a number of galleries spread over three floors.

2. Alberta Craft Gallery

The Alberta Craft Council promotes the work of artists and artisans throughout Alberta, and has the Alberta Craft Gallery located here in Edmonton. There are somewhere between 15-20 exhibitions that take place each year (you can click here for more information), and the media can range from sculpture to glass to ceramics — and anything in between. You can even take home a one-of-a-kind item from the shop, which features the work from over 150 Alberta artists.

3. Latitude 53 

Latitude 53 is an artist-centred organization that supports artists, writers and curators who question, inform and inspire. This gallery is a big advocate for local artists and features exhibits that inspire and spark curiosity. You can see their current and upcoming artists/exhibitions here

4. Ociciwan Contemporary Arts Collective

Ociciwan Contemporary Arts Collective supports the work of Indigenous contemporary artists and designers and engages in contemporary critical dialogue. They value artistic collaboration and foster the awareness of Indigenous contemporary art practices, and have some incredible exhibitions which you can see a list of here

5. Mitchell Art Gallery

Located in Allard Hall at MacEwan University, the Mitchell Art Gallery is a public gallery committed to presenting art exhibitions, programs, and publications that feature diverse artistic and curatorial perspectives committed to critical discourses in contemporary art. They showcase the works of students from MacEwan’s arts program and also features standalone shows that are meant to start conversations about contemporary art – which you can find a list of here.
